Business – Plan or Passion
The only way to do great work is to love what you do – Steve Jobs.
The only way? Well, love for your work is definitely an important ingredient in the mysterious recipe of a successful business and life.
Passion is vital to your success in business, corporate career or life in general. It stimulates, it provides purpose, and it focuses and shapes your work. It provides value and worth to whatever you create. No matter where in life you are, it’s never too late or too early to find passion in your career.
You have to try things out, find what moves you and what fuels your energy. Passion is not there in work. It is found within the person. Knowing your passion will help drive your business and your success.
I was living in California, USA in the year 2008. The whole country was in a tizzy. Everyone was talking only about elections. Barack Obama was representing Democrats. He traveled all over the country talking about hope and change. His passion was unmatched and contagious. He was simply winning hearts with his passion for change in America. He was eventually elected the forty-fourth president of the United States and the first African-American president. History was made! This I say is the power of passion.
What do companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google have in common? You said it right! They were set in motion by relentless dreamers. Dreamers who were passionate about the products and services they wanted to create. Mark Zuckerberg once explained in reference to Facebook’s mission driven purpose –“We don’t build services to make money. We make money to build better services.” His intense focus and passion have driven Facebook to its great success. Learning here could be – do not fall out of love with what you do. Do not lose the spark that once lit your business’s fire. You can still see that fire in innovative products and services offered by these pioneers. World is not the same anymore.
These are some fancy big business that everyone knows of. You will observe countless stories around you where people started a new business with few bucks but truckloads of love for it. Some flourish beyond imagination. Sometimes they fall flat too when love is not complemented with a solid plan. There are unnumbered cases of failure when one wasn’t coupled with another.
Some wise people also say – Do not dream about success but work for success.
Now, what do companies like Toyota and GE have in common? Did you say well laid executable plans, core values, entrepreneurial spirit, and stakeholder focus? You got that right too!
While passion is required to get things off the ground. Processes and plans are required to scale n sustain. Passion is required to take decisions when there is an ambiguity and the future is uncertain. You need a huge leap of faith. The plan has to kick in once you are certain about the landscape and environment you are operating in and data is available to support next steps.
In the journey of building a successful business, you will see the role of both. Any successful individual or business is driven by the right mix of passion n plan. They are the perfect partners in crime. Both are required at the right times in the right doses. Knowing when to use when is priceless. It is not either-or, it’s both. As the saying goes – If you fail to plan then do plan to fail. There isn’t one right answer, there is an infinite possibility of right answers.
If you bring in the passion, we can help you with the planning process. Give us a shout. Together, we can make difference.
